The Ask:

Develop an educational platform to enlighten patients and caregivers on the symptoms of HPP (Hypophosphatasia) and its link to low ALP (Alkaline Phosphatase).

Provide the beacons that connect the existing dots to uncover low ALP as the missing key that could unlock HPP as the underlying cause of the symptoms they are experiencing.

Discovery Phase

Primary User Types

Defining user types is crucial in website design as it helps to create a user-centric design approach that caters to the specific needs and preferences of different user groups. This results in a more efficient and effective website that delivers a better user experience, leading to increased user engagement and satisfaction. By understanding user types, designers can tailor their design decisions, content, and functionality to ensure that the website meets the expectations of its intended audience.

Diagnoses

Diagnosed or Living with HPPLooking for information, support, and treatment options available for HPP.

I initiated the process by outlining a top-level sitemap.

Guiding users through their journey. Provide age-specific information separately, rather than in competition with each other.

Website Optimization

To provide the best possible experience for our defined user personas and their journeys, I focused on:

  • Include calls to action on all pages (including 404, 500, etc.).
  • Ensure error messages are visually pronounced, brief, and provide guidance to fix the problem.
  • Offer a path forward for users who get no results on site search.
  • Enhance search functionality by adding keyword-rich content, auto-suggest feature, and a search box with a button in the header.
  • Improve SEO keyword ranking by creating content around primary and secondary keywords, and including them in URLs and meta descriptions.
  • Utilize the Aesthetic Usability Effect by minimizing imagery and icon use, and creating a visual hierarchy with strong typographic design and white space
  • Provide a guided and accessible experience by using colors that relate to the target audience and are ADA compliant, and following WCAG AA standards for forms, interactives, and screen readers.
